COMMENTARY ON THE STANDARD OF CHIHUAHUA Francis Cochetti
© Copyright :
The standard of Chihuahua, although in general a fairly detailed and specific , leave space , as for many of the standards, interpretations that are a source of study of the fans of this breed.
Some personal considerations:
ORIGIN AND HISTORY : There are several theories about the origins of the Chihuahua. There are claims that the Chihuahua was originally bred from the Indian tribe of the Maya, who lived in the current Mexico. Finds of 2000 years ago, which resemble Chihuahuas were found in those places. The Maya called these dogs " Techichi ."
Even the Toltecs and later the Aztecs , claimed to have brought up the same little dogs , which were also bred to be eaten or to be used in religious ceremonies , where they were killed , with the bodies of the dead , what is the meaning of the existence of a ' other life .
Other theories claim that the breed originated in Europe , so much so that the head of a small dog, type of Chihuahua, is painted by Botticelli in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Of course, the origin of this breed is not yet absolutely secure.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century , we know with certainty that some American, visiting Mexico , imported some subject of this breed. In 1946 they were recorded at the 3359 American Kennel Club Chihuahua.
FEATURES : Dog watchful , energetic and sustained by the movement and expression smart.
Intelligent and interested in everything , they move in the ring safe and non-aggressive , but smart at the same time sensitive . The main feature of the character is to have a high sensitivity , which makes the Chihuahua one of the most enjoyable races.
The standard American cites as their quality to be vigilant as the Terriers. The Chihuahua must seem like a big dog in the ring. You must have the feeling of seeing a " great little dog," with a strong personality. You must move with good drive and long distance . This aspect is very important for this breed , especially nowadays. Many Chihuahuas have a movement with a short wheelbase and do not have a sound building . A good and healthy construction also means a good move and the correct angles of the shoulders, as well as giving elegance to the dog. Feature of the dogs company is to possess the elegance and also the Chihuahua has. They should never move with step hackney or trotting . If the expression is typical , it means that they also have ears, eyes and snout proportions correct. Although the date is typical of the breed mainly from the head, you should never ignore construction defects , unfortunately still common nowadays.
PROPORTIONS GENERAL : Length of body slightly greater than height at withers. It ' important to seek the correct proportions .
In the United States we see very often in Chihuahua square or even shorter than they are tall. This certainly involves issues related to improper gait , the step is short and there is no thrust on the rear. The trunk should be compact but not square .
should be more penalized a square log or too short . a trunk rather than a long wire , especially in the case of females. Very often there is no harmony between the front and rear and the result is a movement rather snare, because the latter is not well angled and the propulsion is not sufficiently adequate.
CHARACTER : Sensitive , gay , witty and intelligent.
Judges must touch these dogs very kindly , they must be on the table and never touched the ground. We must not cover the eyes with the hand or the entire face , when you examine the teeth . Many subjects are a bit ' problematic when they are examined for the control of the toothing . If they try to bite you must , without delay , delete them from the judgment, without postponement because these are small dogs . These problems stem from the fact that the owners have left them to do so, without intervening time.
HEAD AND SKULL : The head is a very important part of this race . The head of the Chihuahua is really ideal apple-shaped . It must be clearly roundabout between the ears and between the stop , which is very well defined, and the occiput . The cheeks and the nose should not be too full . The muzzle is moderately short and slightly pointed . In the times of today, are too easily pointed snouts and missing chin. However , breeders and judges should be careful not to search for faces too full or too short snouts , similar to that of a Tibetan Spaniel . These snouts are too short that may be pleasing to the eye , give rise to subjects hypertype , with globular eyes and it is difficult to maintain in these subjects the teeth closing to a scissor that is required for this breed.
PIGMENTATION : Several judges speak often of little pigmentation. Of course , everyone likes to see a dark pigmentation in light subjects , it also benefits from the expression. The light pigmentation is not a defect and should not be penalized, especially if subjects of white, cream , chocolate . In fact, in colors such as blue , chocolate and cream , the pigment is the same color of the coat.
GEAR : The lack of one or two teeth is a defect , but it is not a serious defect or a defect elimination . You will most definitely work a lot on the teeth that currently are often missing one or two teeth. Unfortunately, there is some person who loses his teeth in a very young age . Judges should evaluate the dog as a whole and the quality overall, without certainly do not ignore the problem, if you want to improve this . Deviations of the jaw must be strictly penalized with the title of " enough " and if the language remains permanently out of the mouth , the same person shall be disqualified . Subjects with jaws diverted must not be used for breeding . Level bite must be tolerated. The Chihuahua has unna rather short muzzle and a pronounced chin .
EYE : The center of the eye is at the level of the lowest point of the ear and on the basis of the stop . Eye or dark ruby , though the new standard no longer speak of ruby color . Today you can easily find those with eyes too small , and this defect should be severely penalized. The Chihuahua is a typical expression of the breed and is given by the eye which is great , though never globose .
EARS : Unfortunately they are very common in the breed small ears . The ears should be proportionate to the head. The 45 degrees causing much confusion. When the Chihuahua is relaxed attitude in the ring or on the table , the ears are normally brought to 45 degrees, but when the Chihuahua is on alert, the ears are much more erect. In any case, the ears should not be attacked very high. Sometimes they are brought behind the skull and only if called in attention , lead them in the correct position. This absolutely should not be penalized in court. The ears should not be too soft and this is a problem that is encountered at the time of the race . Many times, the ears are folded in their half or semi erect. This is a very serious fault and should be severely penalized in court . Improper insertion of the ear determines as a result , an incorrect expression of the breed.
NECK : The Chihuahua must have a good length of neck should be slightly arched. The head should never give the impression of being attacked from behind. A good arched neck is much desired for effortless elegance.
TRUNK - CONSTRUCTION : Building healthy means a straight top line , head brought on a well- arched neck , correct croup and tail firmly attached. The Chihuahua should move the ring full of himself .
The difference between the height at the withers and the length of the body is minimal. The body must have substance and should not be tube-shaped . The Chihuahua is a small dog , but with good bone . The frames read too should be penalized in court . Small does not mean resulting in a light bone structure .
QUEUE : The insertion of the tail is very important to the overall harmony of Chihuahua, when you see it move in the ring. A low set tail gives the impression of a dog long trunk . Usually leads to the wrong result croup and incorrect angles to the rear . The tails turned slightly to one side or turn under the rump, not much disturb the general harmony , but the code on the back and rolled tails from Pomerania , strongly disturb the general harmony . The tail is a characteristic of Chihuahua. The tail should be fairly thick at the base. Short tails are a defect, especially in the short-haired variety .
FORELEGS : The Chihuahua does not have the front of a Terrier , as there is more movement than the elbows at the front of a Terrier. The pasterns are more inclined than a terrier. The shoulders should be well angulated. The bone structure is strong enough, not too light nor too heavy.
HIND : Rear strong with good drive in action. Nowadays , unfortunately, are present in subjects with rings and rear weak under him . There are also those that are most commonly posterior dislocation of the patella serious . In addition to not allow a proper pitch with good propulsion , usually resulting subjects with sloping and rounded rumps too . This defect must be severely punished because, very common in the breed.
FEET : Viewed from the front, the pasterns should be straight , but it is easy to find carpi slightly deflected.
STEP - MOVE : The spine is solid and firm on the move. You should see only two arts in the movement " back and forth " .
COAT : HAIR: When you look at a subject to long hair , you should imagine, hairless , and have to wonder if, once without fur may well represent the breed. In the long-haired variety can sometimes find people with too much undercoat and hard, like a Pomeranian . This is a serious flaw that should be severely penalized. In the short-haired variety there are two types of hair . The first has a soft texture , with little undercoat . The second type has a hair longer and under coat . The blue color often presents problems of lack of hair on the ears .
IDEAL SIZE : Around kg from 2 to 2.5 . You should not , however, penalize any person who falls within the required size from the standard. They should not be accepted for breeding females under 2 Kg .
